Formation of Chard Town Football Club

A very important meeting of the general committee of the above newly-formed association took place on Friday evening at the George Hotel, through the kindness of Host Butler, the chair was occupied at the outset by the President of the Club, Mr A.P. Indge, who in a few well-chosen words spoke, of the necessity of appointing a Chairman of the committee and adding that it gave him much pleasure in proposing Major D. H. Nicholls to fulfil that important office. This was seconded by Mr, E.H Thackeray and carried unanimously. Major Nicholls, in accepting the chair expressed his thanks and promised as far as he was able he would do all in his power to worthily fill the office.
The President then mentioned it was desirable to fill another important office, that of Secretary, and he had pleasure in mentioning a gentleman’s name who he felt would meet with the approval of all namely, Mr, E.H Thackeray, the proposition being seconded by Mr A.W Sanders and carried unanimously. Mr Thackeray in consenting, did so on the understanding that Mr J Hawker would carry on the work with him jointly, and expressed the opinion that with his able assistance no doubt he would be able to fill the office successfully as there would be a lot of work in the first year. Mr Hawker kindly consented to do this.
The Chairman then read a letter received from Mr Sercombe, of Yeovil in regard to the Yeovil and Petters team visiting Chard on April 13th to play a match, and, on the proposition of Mr Pardy it was agreed to write accepting the offer.
Other important matters were gone into, including the appointment of sub-committees such as finance, ground, competitions, selection and social. The President very kindly subscribed £5.5s as a donation towards the funds of the club, which was quickly followed by the Treasurer, Mr E.A. Dening, with £5.5s; Chairman, Major Nicholls, £2 21s; Mr E.H Thackeray £2 2s: Mr F.W Pardy £1 1s; Mr A.W Sanders £1 1s; Mr J. Brown £1.1s; Mr F Wheaton £1.1s; and Mr H.G. Sanders 10s 6d. It was decided to make an appeal for subscriptions throughout the town and district as the initial cost of starting the team wil be at least £100, and we feel sure, knowing theat Chard people are ever ready to assist a good cause there is not the slightest doubt but that the same amount aimed at will be asily obtained.
It was decided to have a general meeting of the committee on Tuesday, April 5th, at 7.30pm, to receive the reports of the various sub-committees, and on Friday, April 8th at 8pm, the general meeting in the Town Hall will take place, when the various ways and means will be put to the public, and it is hoped that all who are interested and anxious to make the meeting a success will attend.
At the close of the meeting, Mr Butler was heartily thanked for the use of the room and a very hearty thanks was proposed to Major Nicholls for so readily approaching Yeovil regarding a match. Major Nicholls suitably responded and this concluded a very successful and enthusiastic meeting.
