FIRST YEAR IN SENIOR FOOTBALL, SUCCESSFUL SEASON ANTICIPATED

There is every prospect of the newly-formed Chard Town Association Football Club having a most successful season if the enthusiasm displayed at a recent meeting of players is anything to go by. There was an unusually large attendance at the meeting, and the arrangements made by the Committee were in every way approved.

It is anticipated that a good team will be got together, and that Chard's first year in senior football, both from a playing and financial point of view, will be one that the management will have every reason to look back upon with satisfaction.

The Club is being backed by quite a number of the more prominent townsmen of whom the Mayor (Mr. F. H. Cornelius) and the Deputy Mayor (Mr. A. P. Ladge), are enthusiastic supporters, while with that well known sportsman, Major D. Nicholis, taking such an active interest, the Club cannot fail to be conducted on the best lines. In Mr. H. Thackeray and Mr. J. Hawker also the Club have two excellent Hon. Secretaries, both of whom have had previous experience in football management. It appears, therefore, all that is now wanted is plenty of talent, and the Committee hope to have this at their disposal. The Supporters' Club is going strong, and working hard to give the new Club a good send-off.

Thanks to the kind offer of a few staunch supporters, who are showing practical interest, a grandstand is to be erected on the ground, with seating accommodation for 150 people. The cost of this is to be defrayed by the gentlemen concerned, and as soon as sufficient income has been derived from it to meet the cost the stand will be handed over as the property of the Club.

The Chairman at the meeting was Mr. D. R. Nicholls, and in opening he gave a brief resume of the work of the Committee during the close season, and assured the players, on behalf of the Committee, that everything possible would be done on their part to support the players, and it only remained for the players to do their part, and the success of the Club was assured. There had always been several junior teams in the town, and at various times most of the local cups had been brought to the town, and he (the Chairman) felt sure that with the talent available combined in one senior team, Chard football would take its rightful place in the county, (Applause.)

The Mayor of Chard (Alderman P. H. Cornelius) said that, as chairman of the Supporters Club, he was delighted to be present at that meeting, and to say, on behalf of the Supporters' Club, that they, too, were going to do their share towards the success of the Club. No-one could have any doubt of its success after attending that meeting, and the formation of a Town Club provided a long-felt want amongst football enthusiasts, and as long as the players played good clean football, win or lose, the Club would have the support of the whole town.

The player’s then proceeded to elect a Captain for the senior team, and amidst great enthusiasm Mr. Albert Follett was elected captain, and Mr. F. Manning vice-captain. Both gentlemen suitably replied, and the Chairman congratulated the players on their choice, and said he felt sure that a better choice could not have been made. It was decided to postpone the election of a captain for the Reserve eleven for a fortnight, when a fuller list of prospective players would be available.

Mr. Tom Sanders and Mr. C. W. Horne (Supporters Club), Mr. E. A. Dening and Mr. E. H. Thackeray also spoke, and a vote of thanks to the Chairman concluded a most successful meeting.
