“CONVIVIAL” AFTER THE MATCH
GENEROUS OFFER TO CHARD AND YEOVIL GOAL SCORERS
After the match the players and officials of both sides and the committee of the Town club sat down to high tea at the Crown Hotel. The President (Councillor All. P. Indge) presided, supported by Alderman F.H.Cornelius (President of the Chard Supporters Club), Councillor Davies (Chairman of the Yeovil and Petters Committee) Alderman Farr (President of the Yeovil Supporters Club and Mr W.J. Trask (Chairman of the Yeovil Supporters Club).
After the meal which was well prepared by Host and Hostess J.H Smith, the rest of the evening was spent in a jovial manner. The first toast on the list was that of “The King,” which was proposed by the President of the Chard Club, after which the same gentleman also proposed “The Yeovil and Petters Football Club” in doing which he said a few months ago the formation of a Town Football Club was mooted by the Chard Hospital Cup Committee; the suggestion was made public and he was pleased to say now that the club had started swimmingly. Yeovil and Petters by their coming there that day had acted as true sportsmen. (Applause)
It was that sort of thing that the town appreciated in another. Whatever Yeovil had done in the past they had never done anything that was more heartily appreciated than their visit to Chard that day. (Applause)
They in Chard were very pleased that their team, which had never before played together, had given Yeovil such a good game, and the Yeovil men themselves would tell them that they had all their way to go. They had some first-class talent in the town, and nothing would bring it out more than a town football club. (Applause). In proposing the toast he would like to couple with it the names of the Chairman of the Yeovil Committee, Councillor Davis, the President of the Supporters Club, Alderman Farr, and the Captain of the team, Mr F Hayward. (Applause). The toast was enthusiastically drunk.
Councillor Davis, in responding, said whatever Yeovil had done in the past they had certainly never done anything better than coming to Chard that evening, but he could tell them that the cost to the club and committee had been nil. The committee had no objection to their team visiting Chard, and that was as far as they went. It was the players they had to thank. (Applause). He congratulated Chard on having such a splendid team to start with and wished the club every success, expressing the hope that their teams might have many similar clean, sportsmanlike games in the future. (Applause)
Alderman Farr also responded. They had been very pleased, he said to come to Chard that evening to lend a hand in the inauguration of their town club. In the starting of a club they must have a first-class Secretary and a good working committee, and they appeared to have got both. They were very fortunate in having the Mayor and the Deputy-Mayor at the heart of affairs. (Applause)
Mr Hayward the popular captain of the team, was received with much applause on rising to respond on the behalf of the players. When he said, he asked the players if they would respond to the invitation to visit Chard they were all unanimous in saying they would do so. (Applause) He must say he was somewhat disappointed with their display that day, because he knew they could do better. But Chard had the making of a good side and that evening with a bit of luck they might have drawn with them. No doubt they would be out to beat Yeovil one day, but he hoped next time they met his team would give a better exhibition. (Applause)
The toast of the “Chard Town Football Club” was proposed by Councillor Davis. He congratulated Chard on launching out and establishing a town club, for players benefitted considerably by playing better teams than themselves. By playing teams whom they could easily defeat they learnt nothing. He congratulated on having such gentlemen at their head as the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Major Nicholls, He expressed the hope that football in Somerset would improve, and that there would be less cases of misconduct. He impressed upon the Chard committee the need of keeping a firm hand in regard to any cases of misconduct in their team. If a player played dirty then they would drop him immediately. (Applause) He wound up by saying that there was a big future for Senior football in Chard. The toast was heartily drunk.
The President, in replying, mentioned that Chard some players of repute and they were proud of them. Only the previous Saturday two of their team had played for Somerset against Dorset and they had acquitted themselves with distinction, Phippen scoring three goals and Taylor one out of a total of five. (Applause)
The Mayor also replied to the toast in happy mood and said the President and Committee of the Supporters Club would see to it that they were not going to be behind, even if the club had a fine President and Committee. He hoped the junior clubs in the town and district would support the town team and endeavour to gain their position in the eleven.
The President here mentioned that he had an announcement to make which would give a great deal of pleasure to them all. He had just received from an anonymous donor the generous offer of a present of £5.5s to each of the players in the Chard and Yeovil teams who, during the season 1921-22 scored the most goals. They very much appreciated the noble offer. (Applause)
Alderman Farr returned thanks on behalf of the Yeovil Club.
Mr W.J Trask proposed a hearty vote of thanks to the President, the Mayor and to the committee. It had given them a great deal of pleasure to be there that evening, and he would promise them that any help the Yeovil Supporters Club could give they would be willing to do. (Applause)
The toast of the host and hostess and the singing of “Auld Lang Syne” brought to a close a most pleasantly spent evening.
During the evening songs were rendered by Messrs Pearce, Potter, Lewis and Mr E.H. Thackeray, whose fine bass voice had not been heard much in Chard, also obliged with a song in excellent style. We hope to hear more of this accomplished singer in the near future
