Brief History

The club was established in 1921.They became members of the Perry Street & District League and won the league's Challenge Cup in 1930–31.

After winning the cup again in 1937–38, the club were league champions in 1939–40. After World War II Chard joined the Somerset County League. They were Division Two champions in 1949–50 and won the Somerset Senior Cup in 1952–53.

The club were Division One champions the following season. After winning the league for a second time in 1959–60, they won the Senior Cup again in 1966–67 and went on to win the league the following season. The club were champions again in 1969–70.

In 1976 Chard moved up to the Western League, becoming members of the new Division One. They were Division One runners-up in 1983–84, earning promotion to the Premier Division. Although the club were relegated after finishing bottom of the Premier Division in 1986–87, they were Division One runners-up again the following season and were promoted back to the Premier Division. The club won the South West Counties Cup in 1988–89 but were relegated again at the end of the 1992–93 season and remained in Division One until a second-place finish in 1995–96 saw them return to the Premier Division.

Chard was relegated in 1997–98 after finishing second-from-bottom of the Premier Division. They were Division One runners-up in 2005–06 and were promoted to the Premier Division for the fourth time. However, they were relegated back to Division One three seasons later.

After a stay of execution, the FA have concluded the club's home on Zembard Lane does not meet the requirements to play at Step 6 of the national pyramid because of the slope of the pitch.

Chard Town FC have been relegated from the Toolstation Western League after 43 years because their ground is no longer considered good enough. This will probably mean the Premier Division of the Somerset County League for the 2019/20 season.

The first season in the Somerset County League didnt go well as it was cancelled halfway through, then the 2020/21 season was also cancelled.

All being well the 2021/22 season will go ahead as it's our 100th year. We finished in 10th place with 35 points.

Season 2022/23 was very nervy at the end as it went down to the last game of the season which involved Clutton and Watchet lucky for us it ended 0-0 which meant we survived by a point,

2023/24

After only three games into the season it was announced by Jason Hutchins that he was resigning from his position. The first game of the season wasn’t easy against a strong team, Clevedon United losing 5-1, then we had to go to Wells City Reserves on a Wednesday night and lost 2-0. A 0-0 home draw against Nailsea United was a good result but it wasn’t enough. Player availability was a big issue for Jason and he had got an offer from Street to play for them and it was too good for him to turn down.

The executive committee wasted no time and appointed Andrew Holmes as the new manager, because of prior commitments Andrew wasn’t available straight away.

Homers first game in charge was against Mendip Broadwalk who arrived at Zembard Lane with a 100% record in all games. James Boyland opened the scoring after only 10m then the strong team of Mendip got two goals back, after 75m we got awarded a penalty and Jamie Brown stood up to take it, great penalty into the back of the net, but because of an infringement by the goalkeeper it had to be retaken and it was finished off in the same style as the first, 2-2 another valuable point gained. The season had ups and downs with players unavailable which did affect the balance of the team, this gave the youth a chance to gain experience in mens football. It was nice to see Chard finishing a respectable 8th in the league. Chard also did well in cups this season reaching the quarter final in the Senior Cup and the 3rd round in the Premier  & First Division Cup.

The U18s did well in the league just pipped by the stronger Yeovil Youth side who were champions,

The U15s also did well finishing third only losing one game and one draw. The future of football is looking good in Chard.
